Helping children understand emotions can be difficult — especially when feelings feel big, confusing, or hard to explain.
The My Feelings & Modes toolkit has been designed to support children in recognising emotions, identifying emotional states, and beginning meaningful conversations around regulation in a calm, visually supportive way.
Created with neurodiversity-affirming practice in mind, this resource moves away from “good” and “bad” emotions and instead helps children understand that all feelings are okay — different feelings simply need different kinds of support.
Using four simple emotional “modes” — Quiet Mode, Ready Mode, Wobbly Mode, and Storm Mode — children can begin exploring:
how they feel
where those feelings fit
what support may help
Designed for use at home, in classrooms, nurture spaces, therapy settings, and SEND environments, the toolkit supports emotional literacy without becoming overwhelming or overly clinical.
